The name
Bentham’s panopticon had one hidden guard who could watch every cell.
Every large ship now broadcasts its name, position, course and speed, and anyone can watch. There is no guard. A forged position looks the same on the map as a true one.
Since 2013
In October 2013, at Hack In The Box in Kuala Lumpur, researchers sailed a ship that never existed across public maps off Italy, with about 700 euros of radio. AIS has no authentication. It has happened since without a stage, and each time a hull would have had to do something no hull can.
